That 'Two Gentlemen of Verona' is regarded as Shakespeare's first play?


As is often the case with Shakespeare, no exact date of the creation of 'Two Gentlemen of Verona' is known. However, there seems to be a general consensus amongst Shakespearian scholars that the play was written between 1589-1562, which makes it his first play.

Employed as his page, Viola – now under the name of Cesario – is charged with winning Olivia’s affections for the duke. She is so good at this, however, that Olivia falls for Cesario instead!

He offers for them to stay in his home, and eventually gives Claudio his blessing to marry his only daughter, Hero. All seems well, but in the dark of night, Don Pedro’s embittered brother, Don John, hatches a plan to split up the young couple and start trouble in Messina. Seemingly harmless rumors flourish, and where big perso-nalities and egos meet, much ado indeed arises out of nothing.

AS YOU LIKE IT - 2015/2016

When the young Rosalind meets the handsome Orlando they instantly fall in love, but this love is foiled when Rosalind's uncle, Duke Frederick, banishes Roselind. She dresses up like a man called Ganymede, and flees to the forest of Arden taking her friend Celia and the fool Touchstone with her. In the forest, Rosalind once again meets Orlando, who has fled his brother's attempt on his life, and disguised as Ganymede, she decides to have Orlando prove that his love truly is as undying as he proclaims it to be.

THE TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA - 2014/2015

The play follows Valentine as he  leaves his hometown  of Verona to serve the Duke of Milan,  while Proteus stays behind with his love Julia.  In Milan,  Valentine falss in love with the Duke's daughter, Silvia, but when crooked fortune  results in Proteus going to  Milan as well, he too falls in love with Silvia, forgetting his love to Julia and his friendship to Valentine.

MEASURE FOR MEASURE - 2013/2014

Set in Austria, the play is centred on the story of Isabella. The plot takes off when Isabella hears that her brother, Claudio, is to be executed for getting his girlfriend pregnant. A sentence that seems too severe for the crime. But alas, that is not the opinion of Angelo, the Duke of Austria's deputy. Isabella begs and pleas for her brother's life, but to no avail - or so it would seem. For Angelo gives Isabella an ultimatum: either she sleeps with Angelo, or Claudio will meet his end at the executioner's axe. What will Isabella do?

KING LEAR - 2012/2013

This is the story of King Lear - a headstrong and old monarch who is blind to his own weaknesses - who decides to divide his kingdom amongst his three daughters, according to which one recites the best declaration of love. Goneril and Regan, who are the selfish daughters of Lear, pretend to love him, but later treat him cruelly. Cordelia, who is the loyal and unselfish daughter, is disowned by Lear after confusing her honesty with insolence. The wrongful decision of King Lear proves devastating, and the tragedy revolves around greed, betrayel, lust for power, and cruelty to a point, where none are left unharmed.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream tells the tale of two young couples, a travelling troupe of actors, and their adventures in an enchanted forest outside of Athens. Meanwhile, among the mortals a battle is fought over affections, and the stormy emotions of young love.

THE MERCHANT OF VENICE - 2009/2010

Taking place in Renaissance Venice, The Merchant of Venice centers around Bassanio, who seeks out his merchant friend, Antonio, to borrow a large sum of money. He plans to use this money to court the beautiful and sought-after Portia. Antonio’s money, however, is tied up in business at sea, and so the two friends approach the Jewish moneylender, Shylock, for help. Lending them the money, Shylock proposes a bizzare caveat, to which Antonio and Bassanio reluctantly agree. A humorous and yet frightening tale of religion, love and revenge.

MACBETH - 2008/2009

On the heath, the ambitious Macbeth is met by three witches, who tell him of his future as a king. When their predictions begin to come true, Macbeth realizes that in order to fulfill his dreams os political power, those in his way must be eliminated. Convinced by his power-hungry wife, Lady Macbeth, the couple murder King Duncan, paving the way for Macbeth to take the throne as king of Scotland. The consequences of this bloody deed, however, soon becomes clear. Macbeth is haunted by visions and nightmares, and can no longer tell fantasy from reality, or even friend from enemy.

THE TEMPEST - 2007/2008

In the middle of the night, a ship struggles to stay afloat in the midst of a terrible storm. On board we find a group of noblemen, among them King Alonso, his brother Sebastian, and his son Ferdinand. What they do not know is that the storm itself is the work of the wizard Prospero.

His greedy sister Antonia, who is also aboard the ailing ship, has overthrown Prospero as Duke of Milan, and as the vessel sinks the passengers manage to get to a nearby island. Here Prospero rules with the aid of his magical staff and his servant spirit Ariel.

THE TAMING OF THE SHREW - 2006/2007

The play starts with the Induction where a trick is played by a nobleman on the drunkard Christopher Sly who arranges for an acting troupe to perform a play called The Taming of the Shrew. A play that depicts the courtship of Petruchio, a gentleman of Verona, and Katherina, the headstrong, obdurate shrew. Initially, Katherina is an unwilling participant in the relationship, but Petruchio tempers her with various psychological torments - the "taming" - until she becomes a compliant and obedient bride.
